Tips to Declutter and Refresh Your Kids’ Closets for Fall

1. Start with a Seasonal Swap

Begin by pulling out all of the summer clothes that your kids won’t need until next year. Items like swimsuits, shorts, and tank tops can be packed away to free up space for fall and winter attire. As you go through each piece, ask yourself if it’s worth keeping for next summer. If it’s stained, torn, or too small, it’s time to let it go.

2. Check for Growth Spurts

Kids grow fast, and what fit perfectly in the spring /summer may be too snug by fall. Before you start hanging up sweaters and jackets, have your kids try on last year’s fall clothes. Set aside anything that’s too small or uncomfortable. This is also a great time to take note of what new items they’ll need for the season, so you can shop smart and avoid buying unnecessary duplicates.

3. Sort and Declutter

Create three piles: Keep, Donate, and Toss. The Keep pile should only include clothes that fit well and are in good condition. The Donate pile is for gently used clothes that no longer fit but could still be loved by another child. Finally, the Toss pile is for items that are beyond repair or too worn out to be passed on.

Encourage your kids to help with this process. Not only will it teach them valuable organizing skills, but it also gives them a sense of ownership over their wardrobe.

4. Organize for Efficiency

Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to organize what’s left. Use bins or baskets for smaller items like socks, hats, and gloves, or even these drawer dividers. Label drawers or shelves so your kids know exactly where everything goes. You can also consider investing in closet organizers, such as hanging shelves or double rods, to maximize space.

For items that aren’t frequently used, like special occasion outfits, store them in the back of the closet or on higher shelves. Keep everyday essentials easily accessible to make mornings smoother for both you and your kids.

5. Donate or Repurpose Outgrown Clothes

As you declutter, consider donating gently used clothes to local charities or passing them on to friends and family with younger children. Another option is to repurpose outgrown clothes into something new, like turning old t-shirts into rags or using fabric scraps for crafts.

6. Get Kids Involved

Involve your kids in the decluttering and organizing process. Not only does this help them develop organizational skills, but it also makes them more mindful of what they own and what they really need. Plus, they’ll be more likely to keep their closet tidy if they’ve had a hand in organizing it.
